Study on the Unity of Urban Settlement
This is a proposal that would be the basic urban unit for a larger city development. An adaptive management, which can accommodate to any topography both in floor and section. The houses are grouped and organized around small spaces promoting the social life of the community. Commerce is integrated into public spaces, and this way many everyday activities take place in the same environment where one lives. This use integration facilitates the development of civil society, since it makes it possible to implement particular initiatives that will impact on the welfare of the community by offering multiple services in one’s own area of residence (supermarkets , hairdressing salons , restaurants, libraries…), on a small scale and within reach of many people. Repetition and monotony must be avoided. Public spaces should be easily identifiable. The shape of the squares and the use of color on the walls makes every person live in a unique environment, “their square”. Car traffic is organized so that the squares are free for the exclusive use by the residents. In addition to the public spaces, we propose that each cluster of houses has a closed and protected space where neighbors may park their cars and have a small private garden or orchard. The single-storey houses have a dual access: the main one through a small porch looking towards the square and service access towards the small private garden.
